Friends Not, Masters [1 of 2]

by Nayyar Hashmey

I already uploaded two posts on the shameful agreeemnt our awami hakoomat has made with the US on reopening transit facilities for NATO and ISAF forces in Afghanistan. As I put up the third one of this series, this time by Humayun Gauhar, I recall the two  posts I earlier had on my WordPress blog, titled: Pakistan ‘trashed’ and insulted, Kayani won’t meet US official (hereand Clinton’s $33m raid on Pakistan shows that, in the end, hypocrisy will win (here

The first one said, “You cannot trash our sovereignty, threaten us, announce intensified drone attacks, kill our soldiers, refuse to apologise when you do the same in Kabul, hold back our money (from the Coalition Support Fund), threaten to cut off all aid and then pretend that it is business as usual.” It further quoted Leon Panetta, the US Defense Secretary, saying that the US had no plans to stop drone strikes despite protests from Pakistan.

And that the officials involved in working out a “package deal” with the US told that there were clear instructions from the Pakistan government that a US apology for a deadly NATO air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November last year was more important than the fees to be paid for NATO containers going to Afghanistan.

“We would be willing to forgo charges in return for assurances on our sovereignty and offer of an apology. It means more than the money, we are more concerned about our dignity and honour.
“If we get assurances that our sovereignty will not be violated and our dignity will be respected, we will not bother about the money part.

In the same piece, Pakistani leaders, including foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar, said that an apology for the NATO air strike is a pre-requisite for reopening the supply lines. Efforts are now underway to ensure that an “acceptable apology is delivered one way or the other to Pakistan.” The powerful security establishment too sent a message to US that a “package deal” would not be possible without an apology.

Now if you have read that Urdu column by Syed Talat Hussain on this "Maafi", thing you will agree that all what La Clinton said, contains nothing like "Apology".

Now let's go to the second post by Robert Fisk and I quote, " WAIT! THE GOOD DOCTOR IS GOING TO POP UP IN THE US WITH A FINE MEDICAL PRACTICE & THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING – OF COURSE THAT LA CLINTON HAS RE-ENDOWED PAKISTAN WITH ITS MISSING $33M". You see how prophetic was Fisk when he predicted that the missing 33 million USD will be re-endowed and the good doctor will pop up too.

After having a look on what our government and what our powerful military establishment had been saying about  the much trumpted "apology", if you ask me, I would say there is absolutely no apology but a muted 'sorry', a word an average American says about 15 times in a day.
